Isla Mujeres - Tranfers Information



Isla Mujeres (“Women Island”) was discovered by accident by Spanish expeditionaries during an expedition led by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1517, he named the island like that due to female figurines they found at the place. In ancient times the island was sacred to Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the moon, love and fertility, which received female forms as offerings that believers deposited at the beaches

The island is located at the Caribbean sea, very close to the Yucatan Península. Is part of one of the ten municipalities of the State of Quintana Roo. The Isla Mujeres municipality is located eight miles from the city of Cancun which is the main touristic destination in the region. The Island can be reached by ferrys or boats that take off from Puerto Juárez, Punta Sam and Playa Linda in Puerto Morelos

You may also find archaeological remains such as the temple to the goddess Ixchel Maya and the Treasury of “Pirate Mundaca” that gives a clearer idea of the importance of this island held in the past from the Maya to the colonial times.

Currently Isla Mujeres has a hotel infrastructure from one to five stars, natural parks, restaurants serving international and regional specialties. Bars where you can listen to the trova and island rhythms, beach clubs, Caribbean shows, swimming with dolphins, turtle farm and a lot of things to discover.

In the downtown area of Isla Mujeres you will find a wide variety of shops where you can purchase souvenirs, t-shirts, beach wear and handicrafts made from different materials such as wood, leather, pottery and shells. You can enjoy the nights in the mexican Caribbean at fine bars and night clubs, enjoying the Caribbean and Afro Reggae music late at night

Some of the biggest attractions of the island are: The natural park "Garrafón" is an ideal site for diving and snorkeling in the reef area, where you can appreciate the richness of the fauna inhabiting the reefs of the Caribbean, the area called "Punta sur" which is located at the southern tip of the island, and another interesting attraction of the island worth visiting is a small archaeological site that was dedicated to the goddess Ixchel

If one tries to describe the island, one will be far from doing it accordingly, it deserves the best adjectives, its beautiful beaches, crystal clear turquoise water are really something you should see. Certainly something that has no similarity is its white sandy beaches that make this an ideal place to enjoy the pleasure of living.
